What Really Causes Yeast Infections in Women?

Most women suffer from or will suffer from yeast infections during their lifetime. While there are many ways, including prescription and over the counter medications, that can be used to treat an intimate yeast infection, there are also many remedies that use ingredients commonly found in a kitchen or bathroom that are very effective natural yeast infection treatment methods.

Douching is so common with many women feeling that they need extra cleansing of the private parts. Frequent douches are actually considered one of the possible culprits for the development of a  yeast infection as many store bought douches contain various chemicals and fragrances that can affect the normal pH levels in the affected area which can lead to candidiasis.

Other problems with using douches too frequently is that they can increase the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). This is an infection that affects the ovaries, fallopian tubes and the uterus. It can lead to infertility or affect the circulatory system with fatal results in some cases. A study showed that women who douched at least 3 times a month were at an increased risk of developing PID

The American Journal of Epidemiology also discovered that women who douched at least once a week are five times more likely to develop cervical cancer than women who used a douche less frequently. Researchers believe that the various secretions and bacteria in this area act as protection and eliminating them with a douche may invite these problems.

The take home from all this is that the womans reproductive organs are self-cleaning. Unless you have an infection, there is usually no need for a douche. If you do douche, do not make it a habit. If you do douche especially if you have a recurring yeast infection, use one of the following douches and not a store bought douche.
